Why we read the ground before we fill it
A pool shell holds water in a place where rain would normally soak through. When it comes out, that spot has to take water like the rest of the yard again, and the fill has to sit on solid ground. In a town where sinkholes have opened before, we want to see low spots, soft areas, cracks in nearby slabs and where the roof and yard water runs before we bring in a single load of fill.
If anything looks wrong, we stop and tell you, and you can bring in a geotechnical engineer before we bury the problem. Most of the time the ground is fine and the job runs straight through, but we would rather spend an extra hour looking than leave you with a yard that sinks next summer.
Fill-in or full removal for an Apopka lot
Apopka does not publish its own pool removal checklist, so the job runs under the city demolition permit through the Building-Safety Department on East Main Street. A partial fill-in breaks the top of the shell, punches drain holes through the floor so water can escape, and fills the rest in compacted lifts. It costs less, but a buyer or builder may ask about it later.
A full removal takes the whole shell out, backfills with clean material and compacts it so the ground can carry a future addition, slab or garden.
