A 1971 median house means asbestos planning
On a house built in the 1960s or 1970s, asbestos can turn up in floor tile, ceiling texture, siding, roofing and pipe wrap. Palatka's demolition permit requires an asbestos survey, and any friable asbestos has to be removed before the building comes down. A Florida DEP notice is filed at least 10 working days before the start date.
The permit also wants the smaller hazards out first. Fluorescent lamps, light ballasts, mercury devices such as old thermostats, and the refrigerant in air conditioners and refrigerators are pulled and disposed of separately. None of that can ride to the landfill inside the debris pile. Once the building is clean, our crew takes it down and hauls it to the Putnam County Central Landfill on County Landfill Road, where commercial loads run $38 a ton in the 2025-26 rates.

Inside city limits, the permit comes from City of Palatka Building and Zoning on North 2nd Street. Putnam County does not handle permits inside the city, so a rural parcel outside the line is a different conversation. Palatka also has North and South Historic Districts, and demolition there needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Board, which meets the first Thursday of each month. Miss that meeting and you wait a month, so we build the board date into the schedule from the first conversation.
Trees matter more than owners expect. Palatka's Site Clearing and Tree Removal permit, $100, covers protected trees, and it counts root damage from machines or grade changes, not just cutting. Trees within 10 feet of the foundation, dead trees and invasive species are exempt. We plan our machine paths with that in mind.

- No. Inside the city, the permit comes from City of Palatka Building and Zoning at 205 N. 2nd St, 386-329-0100. Putnam County does not handle permits inside city limits. If your parcel is outside the city, the county process applies instead. We check the parcel before we quote so the right office gets the application.
