Digging on hills that sit over sinkhole-prone ground
Clermont is one of the few places in Central Florida where a trench can run downhill for a long stretch. That matters. An open trench on a slope collects every bit of rain from above it, and loose backfill on a slope wants to wash out toward the low end. Our crew keeps trench runs short when storms are in the forecast, sets pipe on a firm bed, and compacts the backfill in lifts instead of shoving the spoil back in and driving over it.
The ground is the other reason we work this way. The hills around Clermont are sinkhole-prone, and in 2013 a sinkhole 40 to 50 feet across took down part of a resort building here. If we open a trench and find soft pockets or soil that keeps sloughing in, we stop, show you what we found, and talk about it before any pipe goes down.
Newer lots, buried lines and where the spoil goes
The Census puts the median Clermont home at a 2005 build year, so most yards we dig in already carry buried electric, water, irrigation, cable and gas services. We file a Sunshine 811 locate request at least two full business days before we dig, then hand dig where a marked line crosses the trench route. Private lines like sprinkler mains and landscape lighting are not marked by 811, so we ask you to walk us through those first.
Anything we pull out that cannot go back in the ground, like old pipe, broken culvert or concrete we cut through, leaves on our trucks. In Lake County that material is only accepted at the Central Solid Waste Facility on County Landfill Road in Tavares, and we sort clean concrete from mixed debris because the county charges less per ton for clean concrete.

- Water runs down my Clermont lot toward the house. Can a trench and drain line help?
- Often, yes. A trench with a drain line or a culvert can catch runoff above the house and carry it around to a lower spot. We look at where the water starts, where it can legally go, and how much fall the lot gives us. If the fix needs an engineer or changes how water leaves your property, we tell you that up front.
- Does a trench route through my yard need a tree permit in Clermont?
